Port of Amsterdam International (PoAI) worked to identify sustainable initiatives that can be undertaken by the port authority, both in the port and in the cocoa supply chain. It was done in collaboration with the Port Autonome de San Pedro (PASP) and the Ivorian authorities.
Support for this project
This project with the sustainable initiatives that can be undertaken by the port authority were supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Abidjan.
Background collaboration
Port of Amsterdam International and the PASP have a longstanding partnership. The ports are closely connected due to their sizeable positions in the cocoa supply chain. The goals of the partnership are structured via multiple Memorandum of Understandings. The PASP has expressed a desire to strengthen its capacity in the area of sustainable development.
The strong focus of Port of Amsterdam on sustainable development and responsible supply chains, made Port of Amsterdam International uniquely suited to work with the PASP on this subject. This project started in 2018 and was concluded in 2019.
Services of Port of Amsterdam International
The project had a strong focus on involving multiple stakeholders, gathering their perspectives and interest, while simultaneously stimulating more active interaction between the PASP and these actors. Field research entailed meetings with stakeholders and going through every step from the cocoa supply chain from farm to the port fo San Pedro.
The intelligence and input gathered created the foundation to create the blueprint for a sustainability programme for the PAS, based on the structure of Port of Amsterdam’s own sustainability programme and catered to the local characteristics.
Amongst the services provided were the following:
- A comprehensive analysis of the sustainability opportunities for the port of San Pedro
- Recommendations report, translating the identified themes to possible initiatives that can be implemented in the short, medium and long term. The report listed current challenges, the envisioned solution, estimated duration and the impact of implementation of the initiative in question
- Sustainability roadmap, providing an implementation plan
